Evening grosbeaks

In the spring, when the crowds of birds return to Tatlayoko, our feeder gets very busy (and noisy). This morning the evening grosbeaks were here in force because of an overnight snow storm. There is also a big flock of redwing blackbirds and several woodpeckers, including a pileated woodpecker. The woodpeckers are after the suet that Roma puts out. Yesterday a flock of trumpeter swans flew over very low and landed on the river behind the house. They make such a neat sound. The robins have returned... we saw the first flicker yesterday there are big flocks of ducks of all sorts rafting on the lake.

I guess spring is almost here.

BTW Tootsie, nice poses!

Nice to see some pics from up there Peter & Roma. Birds are returning here too. I saw a couple of robins and several flickers. The purple finches are back too but it's strange how they only show up when the quail are feeding. Maybe they feel safer with the quail around. Does anyone know?
Love, mum

you guys have way more birds there already than we do 1200 miles+further south. We just got dumped on with about 12" of snow this past weekend. I'll post a photo later of our snow.

I love all your birds. We even get pileated woodpeckers in Helena - right in town, which is unusual, but they like our giant blue spruce tree because its the tallest tree around and the very top branch makes a super podium for announcing to the world you're available and very very bossy, as woodpeckers tend to be.

The top spruce branch is also the soapbox of preference for flickers, a pair of merlins, and occasionally a redtail hawk that likes to dine at our birdfeeders (on little birds, not little seeds)

nice photos, Peter and Roma - I know you guys have a dial-up internet connection and can't always share photos as easily as some of the rest of us, so it's good to see your photos up on the family blog occasionally.
love you!

those grosbeaks are such COOL birds, i LOVE their colours!! i don't believe i have ever seen one around here, even though this area is apparently in their habitat range. i found this link to learn more about them, and it includes a sound link so you can hear what they sound like: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/programs/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Evening_Grosbeak_dtl.html#sound

maureen, do you know how to make this link hypertext??>?!! help....
