Mother's Day Nasturiums

Oliver's Mother's Day gift to me was this tiny terra cotta pot painted blue, with seeds and soil, that he made in preschool. We watered them, and voila, they are on their way -- just like our children!

I thought his teachers said they were Nigella ("love-in-a-mist, which made sense for Mother's Day), but I'm thinking they look a lot like nasturium. They are growing like gang-busters now...perhaps we should plant them outside soon.

MB and Oliver, those do look like nasturtiums rather than love-in-a-mist ... maybe the teachers gave seeds for both plants to the kids and forgot to keep track of who planted what-where???

Did you guys know you can eat the leaves and flowers of nasturtiums? They make great tasty salad sprinkles. The leaves are spicy/peppery ... the flowers, too, though they are milder than the leaves. They're also beautiful on green salads!

You can pickle the seeds to make a substitute for capers, too. cool, eh?

Ollie, that's the cutest little pot. I love the color you painted it. That blue will look beautiful with the orange of the nasturtium flowers ... maybe after you plant the flowers in your garden, you can place the pot near them so the blue will be close to the orange or red!

What a nice little gift for your mama, Ollie. I agree with Maureen that they are nasturtiums and you probably should plant them outdoors very soon. Put them where they'll hang over a wall or maybe the flower pot by your front door. What a lucky mama you have.
