Gettin' Together

Gettin' Together

Today's Cottage

Roof's On! Peter and Patrick worked hard to get the roof finished. That's quite critical now that the weather is turning wintry. We're having rain and snow.

The dormer and gable ends will be covered with cedar shingles and the rest of the house will be stucco - colour TBA. Patio will be covered with pavers - colour TBA. Windows will be ordered this week.

Just a few more details....

Just minor details... things that Dad can wrap up in a week or so...

peter and roma - congrats on getting the roof on the "cottage" finished. (everytime I see this house described as a cottage I laugh - it's bigger than our house!) heheh. Now you can bring on the snow, eh?

It's looking very nice indeed. Good job on the design, Marybeth. I like the deep eaves over the porch. Really homey looking.

Maureen - I think the cottage looks much bigger than it is because the roof is so high. The footprint is only 34' x 26' with a couple of divots taken out for the two entrances. There is only one bedroom - upstairs in the dormer.
The space over the living room is open and the useable "living space" upstairs is very small because of the roof pitch. It will be very cosy.

Kathy - Yup - when are you coming?

well, now that you mention the roofline - that's probably the reason it looks big to me. Your house is smaller than ours by about 60 sq.ft. I hear you about the low ceilings in the upstairs -- especially for you, that would be a bit cozy. Our 900+ square feet are all on one level.

Peter will do a bit of ducking upstairs close to the eaves, but he has plenty of headroom in the bedroom and on the main floor. We used 12"x12" fir timbers to support the upper floor and the downstairs ceiling will be at the top of the timbers, making it 9' high between them. The timbers will be exposed upstairs where they reach over the living room. We decided not to cover those timbers which would have made more upstairs floorspace because we liked the feeling of openess. It's a fun project - we're both really enjoying building our own place - finally!
