Bluebirds

We put up a few bluebird boxes this spring and Roma checks them regularly to keep track of breeding success. If you look carefully you can see the two boxes on the fence in front of Roma.

This is what bluebird eggs look like. It doesn't disturb the parents to examine the nest. In fact sometimes when we open the box the mother bird continues to sit while she is examined. Next post we'll send photos of the babies.

Good photos especially of the nest and 6 eggs. How are the babies doing in the boxes at Tatlayoko Ranch?

They are getting bigger and some will be ready to fledge soon. We just checked the boxes a couple of days ago. I'm really enjoying this and want to put lots and lots more boxes up.

Why is there a screw sticking out partway into the nest where the mother bluebird could knock her head on? Who put these boxes up, anyway?

Kathy, That screw is NOT sticking up. It's flush with the side of the box.

The guy that put up the box had a portable drill to drive the screws and the battery died while putting up this box. It will be repaired when the birds vacate.
