A Dinner for 16

This past weekend, our house was used for a friend's (Owen's) surprise 40th birthday party. We provided a clean and toy-free venue (as their house is WAYYY too small!), and Sarah (the birthday boy's wife) did everything else, including renting tables and linens, dishes and cutlery, etc. She and her parents came on Saturday a.m. and pretty much took over our house for the day; they had everything ready for 7:00 when the guests arrived. Sarah and her parents cooked all of the food for 16 people (very gourmet, very delicious!), and served it. We also did a blind wine tasting of each of the wines guests brought with them, and everyone contributed to a painting for Owen that was set up in my art area downstairs. It was actually very relaxing not being responsible for any part of the event (other than the little lie I had to tell to get the birthday boy to come into the house).

These tulip centrepieces were done by Sarah...she wrapped the tulip leaves around a bunch of tulips, and stuck them in the vase...very cool!

Thanks, Mom, although I can't really take any credit! Owen and Sarah were concerned about any "ill effects" that the party may have had on our house and I said, on the contrary, it was a catalyst for getting some things done (like hanging art, getting rid of stuff, etc) that we would otherwise have put off in perpetuity, and that the house was actually better off as a result.

That's so true! Maybe you should do it again! Eh?

How about doing it once a month? Great housecleaning impetus. I'm glad you posted a photo of the people enjoying the party, MB ... I didn't see that pic in the email that came to me after you first posted and I was going to ask -- where are the people?

Everything looks beautiful -- your house is waaaay too clean! ;-}
