Goose Barnacles on Long Beach

Last Friday we took a day trip to Long Beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The weather was stormy and rough all week, and this is what we found on the beach above the high tide mark. It was a log covered on one side by these funny creatures called Goose Barnacles. They are normally found in warmer waters near Australia, attached to floating objects or on piers. They are related to the Goose Neck Barnacle found attached to rocks in the inter tidal zone in our area. Some very strange things have been arriving on the beaches on the west coast such as the giant squid this past summer.

Interesting photo. Do you think the log washed up from somewhere far away?

Very Interesting Kathy, Nice photo. I remember the photo you took of goose barnacles on one of your sailing trips. They're beautiful.

They look like some kind of weird hair-do. Like long gooey braids with a bead on the end.

I think they are from Australia or somewhere close to there.
